Plateau
Mont-Royal was named in 1909 in recognition of its geographic
location, as a plateau stretches from the foot of Mount Royal down
to Sherbrooke Street. The community has been shaped by craftspeople
and workers from the surrounding countryside as well as by successive
waves of immigrants. Landowners such as Viger and Papineau, and
affluent businessmen like Redpath, McGill and McTavish, along with
different religious communities, also contributed to making the
Plateau what it is today. Before 1909, the City of Montreal stopped
at Duluth Street, and north of that point was real countryside.
